Happy 100 Years!!

Once known as the “Lemon Capital of the World”, with a name that means “Scenic View” in Spanish and home to one of our nation’s few, year-round U.S. Olympic Training Centers, Chula Vista is an incredible place to visit.  Chula Vista is located just seven miles from downtown San Diego and seven miles from Mexico.  It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on the west and mountains on the East and has become a special destination for tourists.  Chula vista is the largest city in San Diego County, covering 50 square miles.

October 17, 2011 marks a very special day for Chula Vista.  The city is turning 100 years old.  Although the history is richer and longer than 100 years, it was 100 years ago that an election was held to incorporate Chula Vista into the State of California.  A few years before incorporation, in 1888, the State Commissioner of Agriculture determined that citrus was the most fruitful crop in the area.  Lemon trees were planted in abundance and at one point, Chula Vista was the largest, lemon growing center in the world.  Today you will find many exciting places to visit in Chula Vista, including a nature center, Len Moore Skate Park, Onstage Playhouse and the Otay Valley Regional Park.

If you are in San Diego on October 15, 2011, you might consider a seven mile drive to Chula Vista to join festivities at the Chula Vista Centennial Celebration.  The celebration will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center from noon until 9:00 p.m. and gate admission is free!  There will be live entertainment feature Chula Vista locals, P.O.D., performing at 8:15 p.m.  There will be carnival games, face painting, a beer and margarita garden, a London Olympics Preview showcasing high flying BMX athletes.  There will also be a Lemon Tasting Area taking us back to Chula Vista’s roots.  You can also walk through Chula Vista’s history on the Centennial Milestone Path including a large classic car display.  The night will end with a fantastic fireworks display set to music of the decades.  For more information on the celebration, you can visit www.chulavista100.com and for information on the city, www.chulavistaca.gov.

Botanical Journey Around The World

While visiting San Diego, you should consider a trip the San Diego Botanic Garden.  The 35 acres of garden trails featuring flowering trees and plants from every climate will take your breath away.  The Garden take you on a four mile, botanical journey around the globe.  You can go from an Australian Garden exploring fascinating plants from “Down Under” to South Africa and enjoy colorful flora and botanical treasures of the southwest Cape region.  On your journey, you will also have privilege of viewing the nation’s largest collection of Bamboo varieties.  Through 27 separate gardens, you will experience one of the world’s most diverse collections of trees and plants.

On the trail, you will walk through canyons and hillsides.  You will be able to observe a variety of habitats and many areas provide a place to just sit and enjoy all nature has to offer.  There is an overlook where you can see the ocean and even a waterfall.  You can escape to any place in the world including the Tropical Rainforest, Undersea Succulent Garden, even South America.  There are so many different plants, trees and climates to learn about and enjoy.  The garden is deceptively large and includes the largest interactive garden on the West Coast, the Hamilton’s Children’s Garden.   This garden is complete with a playground, an area for kids to make potted plants out of newspaper and play music on earthy instruments.  Children will not want to miss the garden tree house or the Seeds of Wonder garden that features a miniature, working, Thomas the tank engine railroad.

Your entire family will enjoy a variety of special events in the Garden.  Currently, there is a “Sculpture In The Garden” exhibit which runs until April of 2012, where artists are allowing the gardens to provide a beautiful backdrop to their work.  The weekend of October 1st and 2nd is the annual Orchid Fair where countless varieties of orchids grace the grounds, some in exhibits and some for sale.  With great events throughout the fall season, be sure to check out their website.  You will not want to miss the month of December when the Garden becomes a “Garden of Lights”.   After dark, the Garden is transformed into a winter wonderland with over 100,000 sparkling lights illuminating the Garden for a magical holiday experience. You will be able to enjoy various activities including horse-drawn wagon rides, holiday crafts, marshmallow roasting, visits with Santa, live music, hot mulled wine, and refreshments.  The San Diego Botanic Gardens has a wonderful website, full of information, be sure to check it out before your visit.  http://www.sdbgarden.org/index.html

Things I plan on making/doing… thank you pinterest

There are quite a few ideas I have saved that I really do plan on doing one day.  The how to’s that are out there… crazy.  I just watched a video on how to bind a quilt and I can easily do that.  I would have failed miserably without the turorial on YouTube.  So I thought I would share a few of these grand plans.  Maybe to help make them seem more doable.  They are all very doable.  And I used to do quite a few home projects but stopped since I got pregnant with Slater (that was over 6 years ago).

First up, water storage from rain gutters… doesn’t that sound fun. This is actually a project for Joe.  Once he gets into it, he will totally love it:P  Currently we have our water from our rain gutters go exactly where it shouldn’t and it collects on the side of the house every time it rains.

I have honey oak cabinets.  They are really nice wood cabinets but I am a white cabinet kind of girl.  I’ve had this on the to-do list since we moved in a million years ago.  I’m feeling like it just might happen 2012 (by my hands or a hired contractor… I’m always up for trades:)

Oh how I would love to have a chicken coop.  But Joe says I can’t have chickens until I can keep compost worms alive.  He gave me a whole compost worm kit for Christmas one year (by my request) and it only took a month for me to kill them.  Who knew a four day heat wave in January would be their demise (and I kind of let it go after that… terrible).  I blame my lack of chickens on Joe but who am I kidding… I can’t keep three boys, three cats, a dog AND a handful of chickens alive!!  I digress… isn’t this coop so lovely?

Now this project is right up my alley.  While I have never done any embroidery except on a scrapbook page (award winning I might add), this looks doable.  This link will take you to an etsy shop that the owner will do it for you.  But I think I might try my hand at this.  I have a few favorite pieces I’d like to memorialize in stitching.

I am all about trying just about everything to stay organized.  Of course some of my methods only last a few days.  But how cute is this magnetic dinner planning board?  I admit, my fun would be in creating all the little magnets and organizing the whole thing.  I wonder if it were cute enough, if I would be able to stick with using it.  This one might be a pipe dream (along with my coop) but you never know.

Isn’t this fun to live vicariously through my wish list of projects to do and incorporate?  Ok, next … this is a doozy.  It will actually never happen.  But how cool is this?  And a total how to step by step.  Every kids dream… and in ground trampoline.  We have a trampoline.  But my guess is that the two feet it sits above ground, even with a net around it, is a deterrent for doing anything too crazy.  So above ground it will stay.  But in my dream backyard, it’s in the ground with responsible children who only jump on the trampoline one person at a time (not five).

I know I’ve put out a few lofty ideas.  But this next one… I totally plan on doing this on the side of the house I said collects our gutter rain water.  By saying “I”… that might be misunderstood.  I’d happily hire someone to do this:)

And last but not least… I am doing this in my living room.  And when I say “I”, I mean Joe.  I’d do it myself but I am not a perfectionist and this job requires some precision.  Painting the wood, yes.  Cutting it to exact lengths… eek.  I could never be a carpenter (or a seamstress, I tried).  We have this really awkward angled high ceiling that needs some grounding.  I think some high faux paneling just like this would make that room even cozier.

Alright!  So how do you think I will do on my 2012 projects list. I think at least three of those were soley up to me.  There are quite a few more saved up on my pinterest boards.  But these are at the forefront… right now anyway.  That’s subject to change at anytime.

San Diego Family Photographer, the Cunningham family

The Cunningham family was visiting San Diego from central California for a few days at the beach and Legoland. We did a mini session down at Crystal Pier, and were blessed with some pretty skies with the sun just peeking through the incoming marine layer. As with most beach sessions, the Cunninghams ended up all wet! I love the water and don’t want to deny the kids the fun of jumping through the waves… pressed clothing and all! My favorite (and Laura’s too!) is the photo of the family running towards me in the water:)Be sure to check out our fall mini session special: Only $75 for a 25 minute family session!
